Vintage Photo of the Week

Etta Moten, Singer/Actress
(1901-2004)

This is singer/actress Etta Moten showing serious swagger in a cloche hat. She was the first Black star to perform at the White House, and the muse for "Bess" in George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess".

Enjoy!

I waited years to see Gold Diggers of 1933 with Moten singing My Forgotten Man! The movie was a wonderful piece of vintage, Art Deco filming but Moten's BIG SCENE was CUT! They used her VOICE but made it look like Joan Blondell was singing the song! They didn't cut quite enough, though! If you bat your eye REAL QUICK, Moten can be seen if I remember correctly!

Etta Moten! A forgotten black diva! I really LOVE what you are doing on this blog! Keep them alive, baby! Keep profiling them!
